Date: Wednesday, April 23rd The Hyogo Business & Cultural Center is helping to bring traditional Japanese comedy (Rakugo) to Washington State! Kaishi Katsura, Japan's number one up and coming rakugo performer, has been appointed by the Japanese Agency for Cultural Affairs as a cultural ambassador in order to help promote cultural exchange through traditional Japanese comedic performing arts. Katsura san will be conducting an all English rakugo tour in eleven of America's major cities, and Seattle has been chosen as the first stop on the cross country tour. As Katsura san's hometown is in Hyogo prefecture, the Hyogo Business and Cultural Center will be hosting the event as part of the ongoing program celebrating the 45th anniversary of Hyogo-Washington sister state relations. Rakugo is traditional stage comedy from Japan where a lone story teller (rakugoka) sits on stage and depicts anecdotes and stories involving multiple characters with minimal props, relying instead on voice, pitch, tone and body movements to tell stories and make jokes. Kaishi Katsura is dubbed "the king of English rakugo", and will be putting on a free performance at the University of Washington this April. Come and see what Japanese comedy is all about! * Due to space, seating at the event is limited to a maximum of 95 people. While walk-ins are possible, in order to avoid disappointment we recommend that you register in advance for a one of a kind cultural event! To register, please send an email to classes@hyogobcc.org by April 21st! For more information about Rakugo and Kaishi Katsura, you can see his website: http://www.eigo-rakugo.com , or check out the tour poster for the Pacific Northwest. |
