As one of the most visited castles in Japan, Himeji Castle is always a must-see for travelers visiting the Kansai region (e.g., Kyoto, Osaka, Hyogo). However, many visitors end up missing the hidden gems right around the castle and in the surrounding area.

Himeji is not just a city known for its castle. If you spend a full day exploring, you’ll find a completely different side of the city—one filled with peaceful nature, unique local food, and even unexpected, almost surreal spots.

This is a one-day itinerary to experience Himeji beyond the castle. Feel free to incorporate some or all of these ideas into your plans and create a trip you won't find anywhere else!

🏃9:00AM – Bread, Espresso & Himeji Castle

After arriving at Himeji Station, start your day with a relaxing breakfast at Bread, Espresso & Himeji Castle. This café is set in a beautifully renovated wooden building that is over 100 years old, blending traditional Japanese architecture with a modern café atmosphere.

Inside, you’ll find a peaceful inner garden that reflects the aesthetics of wabi-sabi, creating a calm and relaxing space—perfect for a slow morning. One of the highlights is the large windows, where you can enjoy a view of Himeji Castle while you eat, making it a uniquely “Himeji-like” experience. One of the best choices is the almond toast plate, a local specialty of Himeji. The crispy toast combined with sweet almond spread is simple but surprisingly addictive, making it a perfect way to start your day.

🏃10:30AM – Rent a Kimono & Explore the Castle Town

After breakfast, you can rent a kimono at places like jokamachi style kimono rental and explore the castle town. Most rental shops provide a full set, including accessories such as sandals and bags,so you can enjoy the experience without bringing anything. Dressing services are also included, making it easy even for first time visitors. In addition, hair styling is available for an extra fee, allowing you to fully immerse yourself in the traditional atmosphere.

You can visit Kokoen Garden, where beautifully maintained traditional Japanese gardens create a peaceful and relaxing atmosphere. You can see different beautiful views in each season–beautiful cherry blossoms in spring to colorful leaves in autumn–so there is always something beautiful to see. Walking through the garden in kimono makes the experience feel even more special and immersive. There are also small shops nearby, so it’s fun to stop along the way and try local snacks as you explore.

🏃7:00PM – Dinner Around Himeji Station

Finally, return to the area around Himeji Station and enjoy local cuisine. One of the best places to try Himeji’s famous doroyaki is Nanpu Himeji Main Store. Doroyaki is a soft, savory dish that you dip in broth. While it may look similar to okonomiyaki, the texture is completely different—crispy on the outside and soft and creamy on the inside. Watching it being cooked on a hot iron plate right in front of you is also part of the experience.

Dipping the freshly made doroyaki into warm broth and eating it right away creates a unique and memorable way to end your day in Himeji.
